March 30th - April 3rd

MATH:
Hello everyone! Welcome back from Spring Break. Hope you are staying safe and healthy.
I am hard at work preparing online resources for you. Please refer to D2L this week for information about what you will be working on for the next week. I will update D2L weekly with homework, videos, assignments and or google meet times to ask questions. Stay tuned and make sure you know how to access your D2L.
Have a great week.

ELA:
One day at a time...
So this is our plan: since you have 2hours a day to work on school, let's make it as easy as possible, for your parents! You still need to be working hard, perhaps the most self-directed you have ever been. Please check PowerSchool as I have been updating the poetry writing you have been handing in to me. If you do not see a mark and feedback, that means you need to share it with Mr.Lopez and me hmfeke@cbe.ab.ca & antonio.lopez@ucalgary.ca this week please.
I HAVE SENT YOU ALL AN EMAIL TO YOUR educbe.ca ACCOUNTS, PLEASE CHECK THAT OUT THIS WEEK!
I've got our D2L shell set up and by Friday April 3rd, I'll be able to share a link with you on how we will digitally meet on GoogleMeet. It is super simple but you know me and technology, something is bound to go wrong! Patience, young grasshopper.

SOCIAL:
Please check out your Social D2L shells I have an assignment in Social for you to complete on Supply and Demand. At this point, please print the workbook and fill it out and we will take it up at a later date. There are videos and a lesson plan for you to read and watch. It is very simple, and a good way to get back into the swing of things.  Email me with any questions. Ms Fedchun

STUDENT SERVICES:
Dear 9.2 students,

Wow, this is quite a change! I would love to hear from you. I want to know how you are doing. Whether it’s to give me a quick update or to have a conversation, I want you to know, I am here to support you. We can communicate by email.  This is for all students; this is a safe space where you can talk and express yourself. I will do my best to support you in any way I can. maplante@cbe.ab.ca

9 Science
1)      Assignments for Mr. Davis should be on D2L by the evening of Monday, April 6th, and every Monday thereafter. Go to D2L for this class, read the assignment and get started on it. (Note: more information about how to submit your typed, written or other work will be coming at a later date, so please don’t send me an email about this.)
2)      Please read the Google Meet guidelines that have (or will be) posted in your D2L class.
3)      Mr. Davis - Google Meet science gr.9 every Tuesday at 11:00-11:30am
This meet time is to ask further questions about the assignment, to get extra help or ask questions. The expectation is that you will have already read and started the assignment before the meet up.
4)      Understand that it will take a week or two to get everything sorted. Please regularly read the blog and check D2L. We recognize that it is new for everyone – the teachers included, so we expect it to take some time before everything is working for everyone, and things are going smoothly, so please remain calm and be patient.
5)      If the D2L assignment requires reading and you have challenges with reading, then you should be using some software such as Google Read & Write to help you. If you need assistance with this then contact one of your teachers.
I look forward to hearing/seeing you all in the near future. Take care,

Mr. Davis

ELA:
Hello my dear homeroom! Go outside every day and read. That's what you need to do. You will be missed so please know you can email me any time. Keep checking the blog. Here are some websites to get you started:
https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/6-9.aspx
https://readtheory.org/auth/login
Please share your 3 poems with hmfeke@cbe.ab.ca and antonio.lopez@ucalgary.ca in order for them to be marked. It would be awesome if you could also share a video of you speaking one of your poems to me! I will be looking forward to your dramatic readings!
Book Talk projects should be shared with me digitally, if you have not already done so. Even if this is a video of you talking about your book, or a picture of what you have created, that would be great. Read on!
Here is my D2L shell: https://d2l.cbe.ab.ca/d2l/home/602866
As soon as I hear more information, I will let you know via this BLOG and D2L.

Math :

I hope everyone is doing well. Even if you can't come to school I would encourage to try and take some time every week to do a bit of Math and try to practice some of the skills you have learned this year. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.Many great websites are available to continue  your learning such as Khan Academy on youtube.

Don't forget that you can also use the website Math Drills to access worksheets to practice.

Please note that I am not at school this week and that if you come to clear your locker you can go see Ms. Strickland across the hall to give her anything that needs to be handed back.

Science:
March 19th
Please continue to check PowerSchool for comments and marks on recent assignments/tests or for things that have been handed in late.

The Calgary Board has been setting up material for parent and teacher online use and learning. A reminder that khanacademy.org is a world renowned and CBE approved website for learning math. Khan Academy also has learning in other subjects. Students or parents can (thought they don't have to) set up an account on there to track student progress. There are a wide assortment of math lessons, quizzes and tests to help students learn and track their progress. I'd also remind students that knowing your times tables and being able to recall them quickly, is a very important skill and one that high school teachers see as fundamental for a student to be successful. In other words - practice your times tables! Parents/guardians also teach your child strategies that can be used when a child does not have the times table memorized.

For science, I want to remind students that there are a lot of fun and educational science YouTube channels available.
ASAP Science
Minute Earth
Minute Physics
Veritasium
Kurzgesagt
Vsauce
It's Okay to be Smart
SpaceRip     (my personal favourite)
Many successful science channels have developed sister channels as spin offs.

Also be sure to check your favourite science website for links to similar channels

Missing you guys!
Mr. Davis

We have now begun our Economics Unit with our Fedchun Bucks, Next week, we will be discussing Supply and Demand, students will be able to buy their desks from me, so they do not have to pay rent. Students receive $500 pay each week and are encouraged to start their own business. This makes for great dinner time conversation.

Science:
Please see PowerSchool for regular updates such as day-to-day work effort, grades, assignment completion and marks. Students have been learning to calculate voltage, efficiency, power, current. Kilowatt hours and electrical costs. It would be great if you could show your child your electricity bill and explain the breakdown of kilowatt hours and cost as well as delivery cost and so on. This would help make a real world connection between their in class learning and their own lives. Students also learned a bit about home electrical systems and wiring. Ask them if they know where the home main electrical panel is. Ask them if them about the dangers of this panel and other electrical things in the home and how to reduce the risks.

Math : Grade 9 students have been working on solving inequalities this week. Next week, I will be away to Bamfield with grade 9 students. Students will have their chapter 9 Quiz on Thursday and will. I have updated Power School with Homework Checks for the month of February. I will also be available for Parent Teacher interviews on Friday only (drop in).
