January 27th - 30th

Math:
Please monitor Power School as new grades were entered this week. Grade 9 students are continuing their lessons on solving equations (chapter 10). We had an assignment this week that needed to be handed in on Wednesday. The lessons on equations are becoming quite difficult and every student should make an effort to practice at home and do their homework.

Science:
Students had an interesting debate on whether we should allow unborn human babies to be genetically modified. This would change the human germ line as opposed to genetically modifying the somatic cells of a human after they are born. The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This assignment should be in written format and is due: Monday, February 3rd, 2020. The assignment follows learning about genetics, adaptations, human reproduction, reproductive technologies, genetic engineering and watching a movie about genetically modified humans (Gattaca).

January 20th - 24th

Math: We have started our new chapter on solving equations. This is a difficult chapter that requires students to practice solving equations every day. I strongly encourage parents to look at their child's work in the upcoming weeks.

We have finished our chapter on Surface area and symmetry. Unfortunately, the results of the test were quite low. We will review the test in class together to be better prepared for the midterm questions.

9 Science

Students have finished watching the movie Gattaca. They’ve made notes for and against genetic modification of unborn children and will have a debate on this topic early next week. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups (strongly for, slightly for, slightly against or strongly against). The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This assignment will be completed in written format.

Students  watched the movie Gattaca and were given an assignment on it. They will be having a debate on the movie and discuss the potential consequences (good and bad) of genetically modifying humans.

January 7th - 10th

Math:  Welcome back and happy new year. We started the week by reviewing total surface area and how to find the area of basic 3D shapes. Students have an assignment that is due this Friday. We will start review next week for the test on Chapter 1 (Symmetry and surface area)

Report cards will be coming out in the next few weeks so check online to see that your child has been completing their assignments.

We have started learning about asexual methods of reproduction as well as human sexual reproduction from a genetic standpoint. Other things being covered include: genetics, genetic modification of organisms, cross breeding, hybridization and the future of genetic modification and GMO’s.

SOCIAL:

This week we finished Chapter 3, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and have moved onto Chapter 4, Collective Rights. We will have a cumulative test for Chapter 1, 2 &3 on Thursday, January 23rd. Students have been given a study guide to help them review the topics. The textbook can be found on the very first Sept blog.
